I vividly remember stepping foot into a cigar lounge for the first time…
I felt like a fish in a tuxedo trying to breakdance.
It was like entering an exclusive club, no secret handshakes, just smoke so thick you could practically chew it.
I found myself in the middle of clinking cutters, dancing flames and aficionados puffing away on their beloved stogies throwing around words like “ring gauge” and “wrapper”.
And there are just so many unspoken rules!
Questions swirl around in your mind like:
- Is it taboo to ask to borrow someone else’s cutter?
- Can I relight my cigar without getting the stink-eye?
- How do you hold your cigar without looking like you’re posing for a selfie?
Navigating this sea of cigar aficionados as a newbie can be daunting, so let’s crack the code of proper cigar etiquette once and for all – the essential dos and don’ts that keep you and everyone else puffing in style.
Cigar Etiquette: 19 Essential Dos & Don’ts
1. DO Follow Cigar Lounge Rules
The first step in proper cigar etiquette is to respect the rules – they’re there for a reason!
And if you’re ever unsure about a rule, don’t hesitate to chat with a staff member because what’s perfectly acceptable in one place may not fly in another.
For example, can you bring your own cigars?
If so, are there any cutting fees or a minimum spend?
Regardless of whether these rules seem straightforward or a bit quirky, just remember your grandad’s wise words – respect the rules, even if they seem a tad quirky.
2. DON’T Impulse Buy
Choosing a cigar is more than a purchase; it’s a journey of discovery.
As a beginner, you might not know much, but take the time to explore the vast world of selections, sizes, shapes, and flavours.
Knowledge is power, so read cigar reviews, learn about the different sizes, wrappers and flavour profiles and try different brands to discover what type of cigars you like.
Look at the size of the cigar. A smaller cigar is a 30 to 45-minute smoke, whereas a larger cigar could be 2 hours or more.
Look at the cigar wrapper. This has the biggest influence on the taste and strength. Generally, the lighter the cigar wrapper, the milder it is.
Learning more about cigars over time will not only elevate your cigar experience, it also opens the door for engaging conversations with fellow enthusiasts.
You could take it a step further and keep a cigar journal or download the Cigar Scanner app to keep a record of your preferences.
3. DO Handle Cigars With Care
Whether you’re perusing a cigar lounge’s walk-in humidor or smoking a cigar like a boss, handle them with care like you’re cradling something precious (because you are).
Treat each cigar with the respect it deserves; after all, it’s not just a stick of tobacco; it’s a piece of craftsmanship waiting to be enjoyed.
And if you’re keeping a stash at home – which you totally should – invest in a proper humidor.
Why?
Because cigars need a cosy environment with the right temperature and humidity. Treat your cigars like VIPs and they’ll reward you with a flavourful experience that’s second to none.
4. DO Master The Cut
Ah, chomping the ends of cigars – perfect for looking like a cigar-wielding superhero in the movies, not so much for top-tier cigar etiquette!
If you wanna avoid looking like a novice or total barbarian, invest in a quality cigar cutter and learn the art of the perfect cut.
There are 3 ways to cut a cigar: Straight cut, punch cut and V cut:
The straight cut, with its clean, straight incision, is the universal cut that works for any cigar and your trusty go-to for all occasions.
The punch cut, rocking a small, circular section is ideal for bigger ring gauges for the full focus and intensity it brings.
The V cut creates a wedge-shaped opening to create a generous surface area and ensure a smooth and easy draw for the complete flavour experience.
And if you’re ever unsure, stick with the straightforward straight cut. It’ll never let you down.
5. DO Use A Proper Cigar Lighter
Now your cigar is cut, let’s talk about lighting up.
Every cigar lounge I’ve been to will hand you a cigar lighter as soon as you as soon as you sit back into that comfy armchair.
If you’re gonna be smoking cigars at home then I’d recommend you buy a cigar lighter; it’s an essential piece of gear.
While some aficionados prefer the ritual of burning cedar or the soft touch of a regular flame, using a proper cigar lighter with a jet flame ensures you get an even burn from start to finish.
6. DO Toast Before You Roast
Giving your cigar a proper toast is a ritual in itself that sets the stage for a pleasurable experience.
Hold that flame about an inch away at a 45-degree angle and rotate your cigar slightly as the flame dances across the foot and binds the filler and wrapper together.
With your cigar evenly toasted, bring it to your lips, puff gently, and apply the flame. Rotate the cigar to ensure an even light.
Once lit, give your cigar a spin to check for an even burn. If needed, touch up any unlit spots gently with the flame.
7. DON’T Smoke Too Fast
Now that your cigar is cut and lit, it’s time to truly enjoy your cigar.
Avoid being “that guy” aggressively huffing and puffing as if chasing a gold medal in the cigar Olympics. Rushing is the nemesis of the smooth, nuanced flavours you’re aiming for.
I love cigars because they’re meant to be savoured, not hurried. Take your foot off the accelerator and slow down – that’s kinda the whole point.
Allow 45 seconds to a minute between puffs, pace yourself and enjoy the moment!
8. DON’T Hold A Cigar Like A Cigarette
Holding a cigar like a cigarette is a massive no-no in the cigar world. It’s the ultimate sign of disrespect
Here are 5 ways to properly hold a cigar:
The Classic Hold: Make a statement with your thumb underneath and index finger gently resting on top. This hold screams, “I own the room.”
The Pinch Hold: Refined and relaxed, a delicate pinch near the band between your thumb and index finger suggests a laid-back tone.
The Two-Finger Hold: Comfortable and flaunting a bit of swagger, your index and middle fingers showcase a relaxed yet confident grip.
The Gentleman’s Hold: A dash of sophistication with deliberate moves; extend that index finger for classic, timeless style.
The Flute Hold: For the seasoned connoisseur, delicately cradle the cigar on your thumb and rest 3 or 4 fingers on ton to show an air of sophistication and appreciationship of the craft of cigar making.
Each of these cigar-holding techniques embodies a distinct charm and flair, so give these a whirl and go with what feels the most comfortable.
9. DON’T Inhale
Never – and I mean never – inhale cigar smoke.
Cigar smoke is meant to waltz around your taste buds and the olfactory sensors at the back of your nose (through retrohaling) and not your lungs.
Inhale and you’ll instantly regret it. You’ll instantly trigger an unexpected fit of coughing and spluttering – not exactly the refined cigar aficionado look you’re going for!
To smoke your cigar, simply take a puff, close your mouth and hold it for maybe 2 to 5 seconds before gently releasing the smoke out of your mouth. And that’s all there is to it!
10. DO Leave The Band On
A question cigar beginners always ask is:
Do you leave the cigar band on or off?
Here’s what you do:
You leave the band on until you’re at least a third of the way through your cigar so you give time for the adhesive to warm up.
Let the heat do its thing and the band peels off effortlessly without the risk of damaging the delicate cigar wrapper.
11. DO Mind Your Ash
Ah, the art of ashing – an often-overlooked chapter in the grand book of cigar etiquette.
When it comes to ashing your cigar there are two things to remember:
First, resist the urge to ash too soon. Let that ash build up – it’s the key to a stable, even burn.
And secondly, when it’s time to ash, don’t treat it like a clumsy dancer trying to shake off an ill-fitting pair of shoes. Cigars are meant to be treated with more finesse. Instead, gently roll the cigar over the edge of the ashtray.
Because nothing says you know what you’re doing like a well-ashed cigar.
12. DO Acknowledge Fellow Aficionados
Stepping into a cigar lounge is about more than just smoking premium cigars; it’s an opportunity to connect with like-minded people.
Greeting someone with a quick nod or a friendly hello when you or they walk in is not only polite, but it also sends the signal that camaraderie is not just welcomed but actively encouraged.
In a world increasingly dominated by the isolating grip of unsociable social media, where genuine connections often take a back seat, this small yet powerful gesture goes a long way.
Some of the most intriguing conversations I’ve had occurred in the hazy ambience of cigar lounges, all sparked by a simple exchange of smiles and nods.
And who knows? A courteous nod and a shared love of cigars might just be the spark that ignites the flame of many a lifelong friendship.
Cheers to the bonds forged in the smoke-filled haven of a good cigar lounge!
13. DO Feel Free To Relight
Your cigar is bound to go out at times. Perhaps you get so caught up in a conversation that you forget to take a puff. It happens.
Now, while some, like Zino Davidoff, may argue it’s bad etiquette to relight a cigar if it’s more than two-thirds smoked, I say, why waste a perfectly good cigar?
There could be an additional 20-30 minutes of enjoyment waiting.
So, if and when you find yourself in this predicament, go ahead and relight that thing just like you did when you first lit it. A gentle touch, a steady flame, and you’re back in the game.
14. DO Dress Appropriately
So, you’re gearing up for a night at the cigar bar with your friends, and the age-old question arises – what to wear?
Well, if you ever find yourself in doubt, smart-casual is the way to go.
Each establishment has its unique vibe. There are cigar lounges in Bangkok where shorts, a T-shirt and flip-flops are perfectly acceptable, while others might insist on dress shoes.
Now, you don’t need to don a two-piece or three-piece suit unless that’s your style. The key here is to strike that perfect balance between being comfortable and looking great.
15. DON’T Turn Into A Cigar Snob
It’s easy to fall into the trap of becoming a bit judgmental and snobbish over time…
Take, for example, insisting that only Cuban cigars qualify as the real deal or turning up your nose unless it’s a Cohiba in hand.
I get it. Sticking with what you know is tempting. But imagine missing out on the wide variety of Dominican or Nicaraguan cigars just because they’re not Cuban?
That’s like skipping a chapter in a good book – you might miss the plot twist!
My advice?
Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or a newcomer, always approach each cigar with an open mind. There’s always something new to discover. Don’t criticize someone’s cigar choice; taste is subjective, and everyone has their preferred flavour profile.
So, keep an open mind and make it a habit to explore and try something new. Your palate is your compass, and the world of cigars is your playground, so why not dive in head-first?
Discover the richness of flavours and embrace those unique experiences waiting for you. That’s the beauty of the cigar adventure.
16. DO Respect Personal Space
In a cigar lounge, personal space is as sacred as the aroma of a fine cigar.
Give your fellow enthusiasts some breathing room; it’s the unwritten rule of lounge etiquette.
When it comes to seating, remember the golden rule – maintain a comfortable distance. Never park yourself right next to someone if there are other vacant seats available, unless you’re invited of course.
Now, if seating is scarce, it’s good etiquette to kindly inquire if they mind sharing the space before parking your butt.
And speaking of sharing, let’s talk smoke. While we’re all here to blow a few smoke rings, blowing it directly into someone’s face?
That’s a no-go. It’s not just bad etiquette; it’s a surefire way to get people’s backs up.
So let’s keep it considerate and respect each other’s space to ensure the lounge remains a haven of relaxation and enjoyment.
17. DO Keep Noise To A Minimum
There a few pleasures in life better than catching up with friends over a fine cigar. Just keep your conversations at a chill volume.
The cigar lounge isn’t exactly a library, but still, some folks are here for a bit of R&R, not to be forced to listen to office gossip or your latest family drama.
Same goes for mobile phone use. There’s nothing more annoying than someone talking loudly on the phone! If we wanted to smoke cigars in a call centre we would’ve done!
And for those who love to groove with music or get lost in an audiobook while puffing away (guilty as charged), let’s do a solid for our fellow aficionados and bring the headphones.
18. DON’T Stub Out A Cigar
Crushing a cigar to death is a rookie mistake.
Don’t crush the cigar to extinguish it. It’s not a bug to be squashed so let it fade away gracefully. Stubbing out a cigar isn’t necessary and it fills the room with a foul and bitter smell.
Unlike cigarettes, which have a whole host of chemicals to keep them lit, cigars are made purely of tobacco.
Simply lay them to rest in the ashtray, give them 2-3 minutes and they’ll go out on their own.
19. DO Clean Up After Yourself
Dropped ash, empty glasses and scattered accessories: Nobody wants to walk into a cigar lounge expecting a serene haven, only to find it resembling a room post-party apocalypse.
And, of course, you don’t want to be the one leaving a massive mess behind.
While the staff at the cigar lounge takes care of overall cleanliness, it’s still good manners to clean up after yourself where reasonably possible.
A small effort on your part ensures that the lounge remains a haven for all cigar enthusiasts, providing a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.
